President Trump

May 2014- June 2017

Our work has always encountered skepticism. That was ok, to view very new ideas with skepticism is a wise thing to do. We expected, that skepticism would cease, once the new Linear Mirror had shown its practical value, thereby changing its status from being in idea to being part of reality.

We arrived at that point early in 2014, when the first Linear II had been successfully installed a the hotel “Il Cavaliere” at Pordenone. It worked very well, all on its own, substituting an important amount of natural gas month by month. Once it was clear that the Linear Mirror was a success, the family owning the hotel decided to organize a double celebration, in order to present their new Linear Mirror as well as the book of the families father, Antonio Fregolent in one big feast. In his book, Antonio tells the story of his family, who always have been farmers, telling thereby the story of this part of Italy, from their view. I had the honor to present the book: the book is not only about history, but deals with reality itself. Showing that there is only one reality and there is no second reality besides it. This fitted very well with the presentation of the Linear Mirror, since the Linear Mirror is an application of the physics of information, which comes to the same conclusion: there is only one reality.

The celebration was a big success, many of Pordenones most important people participated. And they were all enthusiastic, how nice, that this wonderful technology is first applied here, finally we are doing something against the fossil fuels, you do not need to go to Rome for doing important things and so on. One of the VIPs asked me to come visit him and explain everything in more detail, so he would write a big article in his newspaper. Another VIP promised to invite the local companies, for which the Linear Mirror would be a clear advantage to the local trade fair to get us talking and than moving. That seemed to be the end of the skepticism, but it wasn't, rather it become clear, that what we had perceived as skepticism wasn't that, it had been something else.

When I came to the appointment with the VIP who had wanted to present me to local industry (3 hours by car) he wans't in, and his secretary did not know about any appointment. So she called him, and made a new appointment, a few weeks later. At this second appointment (3 hours car) I indeed found him in his office, he presented me to his technician and then left, explaining that he had important things to do. The technician told me, that he would not need energy and therefore he would not need a mirror. The other VIP, the one from the newspaper, told me that I should not call him “don't call me, I call you”. And so on. So the politicians and important leaders of the community had expressed their support for new technologies in the field of renewable energies only and only because their electorate had been present.

The grotesque difference between the image the opinion leaders wanted to give in public and their real interest had become grotesquely emphasized by the splendor of the celebration at Pordenone. But it was not different from what I saw at Berlin, Munich, Udine, Triest, Hamburg, elsewhere, everywhere. A German minister (Roettgen) had praised the Linear Mirror, as long as photographers and journalist where around. The Bavarian government had given a medal for the wonderful Linear Mirror on a big stage in front of many jounalists. Members of parliament are informed. In particular politicians of the Green Party know abou the Linear Mirror very well. The Petra Kelly Stiftung had invited me for a presentation, two of the most important green politicians were also invited, one of them gave a presentation. Of course before my presentation, since he was important and me not. For more than an hour he showed transparencies, which very obviously he shows always at all occasions, saying again and again the same argument “if we save each year x% more energy, the energy saving in 20 years will be y%”, without ever saying how he wanted to arrive at those savings, but that wasn't the point really. The point were the trigger words he said in intervals of a few minutes, like “nuclear power”, “capitalists” etc, creating shouting, excitation, the warm feeling of being part of a band of brothers. One could see the warmth. When people were tired of shouting, I was allowed to talk for the remaining 15 minutes, some of the people stayed till the end for they are educated well, and then everybody went home.

One might suspect, that for some unspoken reason green politicians and green voters are not against renewable energies in general, but only against mirrors. Like for instance vampires, who dislike mirrors, too, it is said. But its more complex that that. They seem to dislike mirrors only as long as they are harvesting energy in Germany. If you put mirrors in the north African desert, for 400 billion Euros, and make electrical energy with them (efficiency 15%) and discharge the remaining 85% boiling away water (in the desert), and finally send the electricity produced with long cables to Germany – well, than the greens just love it. Can't get enough of it. They called it Desertec. At least until 2014 they loved that. I wrote an article, showing that Desertec would have been an ecologic desaster, heating up the planet by a lot ( http://www.isomorph.it/letters/articles/desertec ), their response was illiterate. I inserted the argument in the wikipedia article about Desertec, where it remained for two days, before it was canceled. Desertec died in 2014, when people could not hide anymore, that the technology to be used was totally inadequate and useless.

But if the mirrors weren't the problem, what else is the problem? After all, 7 million people die each year because of dirty air, the planet is heating up each year, with the money Europeans pay for Russian gas, wars are fought, which create homeless people and fugitives. Making use of renewable energies instead of fossil energies would solve all of these issue. So, if mirrors aren't the problem, what else is the problem?

While absolutely nothing fundamentally new happened over the last 20 years in the field of solar energy, the oppion leaders organized one conference after the other. Until they arrived at the climate agreement of Paris. That agreement foresees a lot of things, like for instance sending a lot of money to countries like in North Africa, where Desertec finally could be built without calling it so. One thing is not foreseen: technical innovation. It is foreseen to share technical innovation, sending money around. But not to create technical innovation. When reading the Paris agreement, one cannot miss it anymore, one cannot avoid to understand, what is going on: the global heating must be stopped by the opinion leaders, by administrative means, by giving money to lobby groups. But not by fundamental technological innovation. But if we cannot solve the problems without technological innovation, without physics? Then the planet better may burn – that is what they tell us year after year, without words.

The second Linear Mirror was bought by an artist, Elena Mazzi, financed by Botkyrka Konsthall (Stockholm). Her project “Reflecting Venice”, based on a Linaer Mirror, was made part of the Fittja Pavilion, curated by Botkyrka, during the Biennale of Architecture at Venice (collateral event). It was a good success, the journal Domus showed this work, and Elena was invited for the following year for the Biennale of Istanbul as the only young italian artist invited there.
